Throughout 2023, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has continued to revolutionize the Italian technological landscape, marking a real watershed between the "before" and "after" ChatGPT. According to the report by the Artificial Intelligence Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, with which GMDE is a partner, the growth of the AI market in Italy, recorded unprecedentedly, saw an increase of 52% compared to the previous year, reaching 760 million euros. This development has been driven by a strong interest in Generative AI solutions from large companies, although their operational implementation remains a future prospect. The majority of the turnover (69%) comes from orders from Italian companies, while the remaining 31% is attributed to the export of projects.
The market is segmented into various classes of solutions, including:
Data Exploration & Prediction Systems and Decision Support & Optimization Systems, which together constitute 29% of the market. These solutions include demand forecasting systems and production optimization, among others.
Text Analysis, Classification & Conversation Systems, representing 27% of the market and include systems for the interpretation of written language and conversational systems.
Recommendation Systems, which with 22% of the market confirm their central role in various sectors, offering personalized recommendations.
Image and Video Analysis Systems occupy 10% of the market, with applications in quality control, infrastructure monitoring, and damage estimation in the insurance sector.
Process Orchestration Systems are at 7%, orchestrating business processes through the management of decision-making junctions and optimization of activities.
Generative AI, although it represents 5% of the market, emerges as a promising new entrant with growth potential in the sector.
Sectorial Impact
The Energy, Resource & Utility sector remains the leader with 16% of the market, followed by Banking and Manufacturing at 15%.
The Telco & Media sector, with 12% of the market, stands out for the highest growth rate and a high average expenditure per company.
Other relevant sectors include Insurance, Chemical Pharma & Healthcare, and GDO & Retail.
Attention is also shifting to how AI can contribute to rebalancing the national labor market and supporting the country's economic growth.
