With the introduction of the product safety regulation, eCommerce websites are now required to provide users with greater completeness and transparency of product information. This change not only protects consumers but also requires industry operators to adopt advanced technological solutions to manage data accurately and effectively.
What is the General Product Safety Regulation?
The General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) aims to ensure a high level of consumer protection across the European Union by defining the obligations for retailers, manufacturers, and other stakeholders.
Obligations for Stakeholders
The GPSR requires online retailers to Ccearly label products, provide complete details about the manufacturer or the person responsible within the EU, include images and identifiers to recognize the product and add warnings or safety instructions in the appropriate language. These obligations, effective from December 13, 2024, impact the entire supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, and distributors.
Previously, product safety was governed by Directive 2001/95/CE. Since the GPSR is a regulation, it does not require transposition into national legislation to take effect. Published in May 2023, the GPSR became enforceable after an 18-month transition period.
Implementing these requirements may pose a significant administrative burden for companies. Therefore, preparing in advance to comply with the EU regulation is crucial to avoid penalties imposed by individual Member States. But how can this challenge be addressed? The answer lies in innovative technologies like Shopware and Pimcore, which together can make a real difference.
